Sample Sales Invoice Template: Using Line Number Instead of Item# (IMFE Edition)

This sample invoice template shows automatically the line number of an item in the place of item# or product# on the invoice body. The sample demonstrates the flexibility of an Excel-formatted invoicing template.

Most invoice templates available here on have a Product # (or sometimes titled "Product ID" or "Item#") column on the invoice body. If you are using Invoice Manager for Excel, our invoicing software and billing software that uses Excel invoice templates as it's front-end, the product# or item# is a required field that is used to uniquely identify a product or an item. With the product# or item# field, Invoice Manager for Excel is able to save the description, unit price and all the other related information into database, so that you can retrieve these type of information by entering the product# or item#, without typing the same description, unit price etc. again and again. So in most cases if the product# or item# column is not required to display on the printable invoice form, we move it out of the printable form, instead of delete it. The product# field also helps in generating the product report in Invoice Manager for Excel.

But there are situations where you don't need the product# or item# at all. In this Sample Sales Invoice Template: Using Line Number Instead of Item# we'll assign a line number to the product# field automatically using Excel formula. It is a good example on how the default sales invoice template could be customized in the way you like.

This sample invoice template was originally published as a customization sample on at Sample Invoice Template: Using Line# as Product IDs, where you can also find detailed steps on how to create the sample invoice template based on the default sales invoice template shipped with Invoice Manager for Excel. categorizes this template as Sales Invoice Template, meaning it includes shipping fields on the form. A service template, where we moved out the shipping fields from the printable invoice form, is also available at Sample Service Invoice Template: Using Line Number Instead of Item#.
